Orbit Newsletter. May '06

Nothing stands still, and there have been many changes since our last newsletter. We do have a web site now and there are items of news and interest there. This newsletter will be posted there. www.orbit-trampoline.co.uk

Our membership stands at 332 to date, Monday nights at Bletchley have changed, consolidating classes. We now operate from 4.30pm. – 7.30pm. and after a brief closure, the adult class has been resurrected at 7.30pm. Fridays at Bletchley for squad are going well, bringing them together for another night, and the rig is proving its usefulness. The Stantonbury Fridays are slowly filling up, but some places remain available. National Selection. Late last year Lorna Smith and Hugh Sullivan were selected for the British Cluster, Start and Potential, and Performance training groups, held in our case in Northampton.

John Beer and Jack Kelly (National team directors) structure the sessions and give input and feedback, and Tracy Whittaker and Robin Atkins lead the coaching, although most of the work is designed to come from each domestic club coach. These meetings have been inspirational for Lorna and Hugh, bringing their performances and expectations ever higher. Their performances are monitored and recorded, and improvement is expected each time, so it is really hard work. Unfortunately, after the second meeting Lorna fell ill and has been unable to train at all, leaving Hugh by himself. We all wish her a speedy recovery. High Performance Coach Course.

In July 2005 Russ attended his week HPC course in Gillingham taking Lorna every day, and Billie Murphey a couple of days. The drive was a nightmare and we were grateful when Gen attended on the Thursday and we were then able to stay over on the Thursday night. Both girls learned a lot despite the heat and Lorna now has all the building blocks of any moves she will need for the next three years. Russ has yet to accumulate the required 50 mentored hours and to sit the exam!!

Expenses.
In March Carl Furrer came to do an annual inspection of the equipment at Bletchley, and adjustments and call-out came to £150 40p but more worryingly his recommendations will cost £1,327.0p He has one bed which requires a re-stitch, while we borrow a replacement, but we will have to consider some fund raising to cover the costs. Let’s hope that no such expense shows up at Woughton or Stantonbury!

IMPLEMENTATION of the FIG ( federation of international gymnastics) rules for judging trampolining have been taken to the letter this season to better prepare our National trampolinists for international competition, Beijing and 2012. This has proven difficult for both judges and competitors, seeing performances which would have earned 7.5 – 8.0 last year gaining as little as 6.5. Consequently the qualifying scores for reaching & retaining each grade have been lowered and not many people are now sure of what the necessary scores are, as they have now changed for a third time this year. However, I do (know) and to date we have the following movements within our squad; Roisin O'Brien U13 Gr.3 scored 49.2 in Jan and 48.7 in March both above the 48.5 line needed for grade 2. Millie Ciciura U13 Gr.3 scored 48.7 in March also making grade 2. Joshua Wheeler U13 Gr.3 scored 48.8 in January taking him over the line to 2. Rhiannon Owen U15 Gr.4 scored 48.8 in January above the required 48.0 for grade 3. Jo Armitage U15 Gr.4 also scored 48.4 taking her to grade 3. Daisy Edwards U13 Gr.4 scored 48.1 over the 47.5 needed for grade 3. Lewis Wheeler U11 Gr.4 scored 47.8, also over the line for 3.

Hugh Sullivan and Emily Young have booked themselves a hard earned place in the Final of the National Championships in July. Jez Billingham tries again in mid May and we send all our hopes with him.

MOVES ETC.
We have several moves growing in the rig lately; Double backs are there for Roisin O’Brien, and a double front, Laura Roberts, Emily Young, Rhiannon Owen, and Jo Armitage, who stood one feet to feet out of the rig last week. HoKwan has done some in the rig as well, and we all heard her!! Hugh is gaining a double front. Out of the rig, Laura, Rhiannon, Roisin, Millie and Glyn all approach full twisting backs. Rudis are slowly developing for Glyn, Emily, Jez and Hugh. It’s safe to say that Glyn has the ‘half-out’ now When they return from studies and injuries respectively, Laura Garnham and Rebecca Gladwin will resume with their consolidation of new moves. Sadly, injuries keep two of our keenest members in recovery. At the beginning of November last year Jemma Catterall bounced on her hands and knees in a seemingly innocent return to the end frame, and sustained a serious break of both her right ulna and radius. It ruined her good chances in the grade 2 National Finals and has understandably given her confidence a big knock. However, Jemma has been back bouncing on Wednesdays, and it is only a matter of time until she feels ready to return to full form. Nicole Whitchurch was having an inspired day during January performing some lovely crash dives, a relatively new move for her. Unfortunately she did one too many, and caught her arm beneath herself, fracturing her elbow. This turned out to be more complex in the healing process and Nicole is still not quite ready to resume her training. Watch these spaces.

Penny Smith has dropped her Tuesday coaching for the time being, and we would like to know whether there are any parents or performers who would like a coaching opportunity?

Judging continues to be a headache, well the requirement of judges at competitions does and we need more at both the first level and the next two above. On Sunday May 14th. we compete in the M.K.Open when we hope to defend our 3rd. win last year to make it a 4th.!! Please come along to Bletchley College Sherwood Drive, to support your club.

STOP PRESS - ATTENTION ALL JUMPERS - RECOIL CLUB HAVE ARRANGED THEIR 'OPEN' COMP. ON THE SAME DAY, 2ND. JULY AND AS THIS WOULD BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME OF YOU TO COMPETE IN A CHALLENGING SITUATION WE WILL POSTPONE OUR OWN COMPETIION. SUBJECT TO CONFIRMATION FROM THE LEISURE CENTRES WE WILL HOLD ORBIT COMP. ON THE FOLLOWING WEEK JULY 9TH. . More information to follow, but put the date in your diary. If you have any news please Email it to us. Yours in Sport, Russ and Genni.

Orbit news, August '05:

For those not already aware, Hugh Sullivan has been picked by the British selectors to join a cluster of trampolinsts who will make up the World Start programme, or age group international for the boys under elevens. Brilliant news both for Hugh and the club - let that inspire all you members to set your sights high!!

The last graded competition of the year takes place at Ipswitch on Sun. October 2nd. and the closing date is September 12th. The entry levels are grades 5 - 3 so let's see who can finish the season on a high note and move up a grade. Reply either through the web site or see Gen or Russ in the usual way.

We could really do with a coaches meeting to discuss progress, equipment etc. and maybe have a coaching clinic to exchange ideas. Any dates preferred??

Lastly for now, Russ is tutoring a Trampoline Coach course at Bletchley on Sept. 10/11th. & 17/18th with the exam on the 18th. For anyone wanting this qualification it is a good opportunity to take a course in Milton Keynes.

Give us your news if you have any.

We are happy to offer Parties on Saturdays, Sundays or during School holidays at various sports centres
